Generative AI Policy

JICEE recognizes that generative artificial intelligence (AI) and AI-assisted technologies are increasingly used in academic writing and research, and the journal sets out clear expectations for their responsible use by authors, reviewers, and editors.

For Authors

  • Generative AI tools may be used to assist with language refinement, grammar, and readability, but must not be used to generate scientific analysis, interpret data, or draw research conclusions on the author's behalf.
  • Any use of generative AI in the preparation of a manuscript must be explicitly declared, identifying the tool used and the purpose for which it was used, in accordance with the disclosure format provided in the JICEE author guidelines and article template.
  • AI tools must not be listed as an author or co-author under any circumstances. Authorship requires accountability that can only be held by a human contributor.
  • Authors remain fully responsible for the originality, accuracy, and integrity of their manuscript, including any content informed by AI tools, and must verify that AI-generated text does not introduce fabricated citations or factual errors.
  • AI tools must not be used to create or alter research data images or experimental results. Their use in connection with figures is limited to conceptual or explanatory diagrams, and any such use must be disclosed in the figure caption.

For Reviewers

Reviewers must not upload a submitted manuscript, or any part of it, into a generative AI tool, as doing so risks breaching the confidentiality and intellectual property rights of the authors. Peer review requires independent human judgment, and AI tools may not be used to perform the scientific assessment of a manuscript.

For Editors

Editors must likewise refrain from uploading manuscripts or related correspondence into AI tools. Editorial decisions require human evaluation and accountability, and AI tools may only be used in a limited, supportive capacity — for example, to improve the clarity of correspondence — without influencing the substantive evaluation of a manuscript.

Plagiarism Screening of AI-Assisted Text

All manuscripts, regardless of AI assistance, are subject to JICEE's standard plagiarism screening using Turnitin, with a maximum similarity threshold of 20% (see Plagiarism Policy).
